Fishtail Plaits.

Okay for you Americans/British/whoever else doesn't use the term plaits - a plait is a braid. There has been this recent obsession with some of the girls in my class surrounding this and plaiting each other's hair in class. Up until about an hour ago, I hadn't been able to do one but thanks to WikiHow,  I have successfully learnt. My sister was gracious enough to let me use her as a model to perfect it and after about 5 attempts, I managed to do a pretty good fish plait. It's pretty easy to do once you get the hang of it and it's much easier to do if the hair is not layered - if it is you'll have to take the hair from underneath thus including the shorter layers.

The method is pretty easy:

1. Divide your hair into two large sections, parting it down the middle. 
2. Pull a thin strand of hair from the outside of the left section and pull it over the top of the left section and grip it under the right section. So over left, under right. 
3. Do the same with the right side, pulling a thin strand of hair over the right section and under the left section. 
4. Continue alternating sides weaving over and under until you have reached the end of your plait. 
5. Tie the end with an elastic and you're good to go. 

Some general tips:

• Try to use the same thickness for each strand throughout your plait so it doesn't end up looking uneven. 
• Use thinner strands to make it look more intricate. 
• It helps if you pull tighter. 
• If you feel the plait is too tight use your fingers to gently massage into the strands to loosen it slightly. 
• Just remember - over, under. 

I took this method from WikiHow and there are pictures which aid the method on the site, they also have an alternate method but that looks more complicated.

So at least I can say that I accomplished something today; I learnt how to do a fish plait. Yaysies.

Long Weekend.

So this past long weekend was jam-packed with sightseeing and touristy things with the exchange students. There's no way I'm going to type everything we did so here's a few photos to highlight what we did. It was a really fun but tiring weekend.

Beaches and Tea.

Day 2 of hosting the exchange students was pretty eventful.  I first thought we wouldn't get to do anything in the morning because they were still recovering from lack of sleep due to traveling and woke up pretty late. Nevertheless, we did go to the beach for breakfast and walked on the beach for a bit. We ate at Cafe Jiran and thereafter walked on the promenade and because we were walking with two foreigners, who have never experienced sandy shores back home, we were soon walking on the sandy beach. We even dipped our legs in the not-so-icy sea and mucked around in the sand. Being Durban's winter, it wasn't all that cold for the Canadians.

In the afternoon we went for High Tea as a farewell for the Scottish exchange students. It was a really good excuse to get all dolled up in girly dresses and heels and prance around eating delicious cakes and drinking tea for two hours. Let's not forget taking tons of photos with the most amazing views of Durban as our backdrop. There was also the excitement of spotting a monkey in one of the trees for our Canadian exchanges who have never seen one before. It was a really cute afternoon.

Exchange Students.

At last the Canadians have arrived. After waiting almost 5 months since leaving Canada for these two weeks: it is here. It started off on a wobbly note when there was a bit of an airport mishap with bags being lost and people getting left behind but thankfully both the bags and the girls are safely here. It's exciting to see Durban through their eyes and seeing what we take for granted or as everyday - e.g. the beach. I'm also really keen to show them where I live and how I live after being on exchange in Canada; showing them school, the beach, Gateway, the stadium and all that fun stuff. So I shall keep you all posted on what we do and where we go as it happens. It shall be an exciting two weeks.
